The rehearsal keeps going.

They’re the same question, asked in different rooms.

I write plays about people who have performed certainty for so long they’ve forgotten what certainty feels like. A community theatre discovers rehearsal becoming confession. Four step-siblings sort through a house that remembers more than they do. A campaign office slowly realizes the system it serves has begun rewriting the people inside it.

For more than thirty years, I’ve also written original interactive theatre—murder mysteries in which audiences become suspects, detectives, witnesses, and accomplices. The mysteries continue to grow alongside the plays. They’ve taught me as much about dramatic writing as any rehearsal room: how audiences pay attention, how tension accumulates, how laughter changes the temperature of a scene, and how participation transforms a story.

The Notebook is where those discoveries continue. It’s a collection of reflections on dramatic architecture, audience psychology, comedy, institutions, and the strange ways a play keeps teaching its playwright long after opening night.
